Cruises to Alaska: How to Choose

Making the decision to take a vacation cruise to Alaska is a simple one; however, choosing a specific Alaskan cruise is not such an easy task. This is because there are so many options available—and choosing nearly any of them would give the traveler an incredible journey. Any type of Alaskan cruise is going to provide a person with memories to last a lifetime.

A person does have to make a decision about which specific cruise to Alaska to take, though—regardless of how difficult it may be to choose among all of the remarkable options. So, here are a few suggestions on how to select the best Alaskan cruise.

Inside Passage or Gulf of Alaska?

Cruises to Alaska follow one of two itineraries—either the Inside Passage or the Gulf of Alaska. The difference involves where the cruise ships travel and their ports of call. Read these itinerary descriptions and you should be able to decide whether you would prefer to travel on an Alaskan Cruise that follows an Inside Passage or a Gulf of Alaska itinerary.

Inside Passage: These cruises are typically seven or ten day trips. Land can usually be seen at all times; Inside Passage cruises are not out in the open sea. Ports of call may include Ketchikan, Juneau, Victoria, and others.

Gulf of Alaska: These cruises travel in the open sea, going further north than Inside Passage cruises. The Ports of call may be the same as those above; however, this is the type of cruise to select if you are planning to explore the interior of Alaska.

Ports of Call Excursions

If there is a specific city or destination in Alaska that you would like to see, you will want to choose a cruise that includes that spot as a port of call. Most cruises have three ports of call per cruise; therefore, not every cruise is going to include your desired destination.

If you do not have a predetermined Alaskan destination in mind, you can still use ports of call as a way to help select the best Alaskan cruise. Simply take a look at the ports of call offered for each cruise available during the time at which you want to travel and see which cruises offer the most enjoyable ones.

Size of Ship

You can opt for a mid-size to large ship, which holds between 700 to 3000 passengers. These ships generally have all of the amenities a person would expect from a cruise line—including rooms with private balconies. These rooms are costly; however, it can be quite exciting to stand out on a personal balcony at dawn and watch for ocean animals.

You may decide for a small ship, which holds less than 200 passengers. While not as lavish as the larger ships, small ships do offer a more personalized view of Alaska.

With glaciers that are thousands of years old, beautiful scenery, and exotic animals that live in no other part of the country, Alaska can be quite exciting to see. Cruises to Alaska are becoming more popular among travelers every year.
